Anew Climate, a global leader in low-carbon fuels and climate solutions, has joined the SEA-LNG coalition as it works to reduce emissions across the global shipping industry by promoting the methane decarbonisation pathway. International shipping accounts for roughly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the International Maritime Organization has set a strategy to reach net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by or around 2050, making scalable fuel pathways a pressing industry need.

Majority-owned by TPG Rise, Anew delivers liquefied biomethane (LBM or Bio-LNG) for maritime decarbonisation across vital shipping hubs in North America, Europe, and Asia. The fuel reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to marine diesel on a full well-to-wake basis.

Anew's membership in SEA-LNG comes as liquefied biomethane adoption accelerates under regulations such as FuelEU Maritime, which took effect in 2025 and requires fleet operators to pool to meet GHG intensity targets. The regulation is one of several measures — including the extension of the EU Emissions Trading System to maritime emissions from 2024 — that are reshaping compliance economics for shipowners. Liquefied biomethane use generates credits within FuelEU Maritime's pooling mechanism, which operators can use directly for compliance or sell to other fleet operators. The fuel leverages existing LNG infrastructure and is already bunkered at roughly 70 ports across Europe, the U.S., and parts of Asia. Some production pathways can achieve negative carbon intensity by avoiding emissions, such as methane that would otherwise be released from waste streams. However, the long-term scalability of Bio-LNG supply remains a watchpoint, as global biomethane production is still a fraction of fossil LNG output.
