Shares of Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) rose about 2% on Monday after Google opened pre-orders for Googlebook, a new premium laptop category built around the company's Gemini AI. The launch gives Google another way to bring Gemini directly into consumer hardware while expanding beyond the traditional Chromebook market.
Googlebook starts at $899, with initial models coming from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The devices run on Intel or Qualcomm processors and are rated for up to 14 hours of battery life, and the company is promoting 2.8K OLED touchscreen displays across the lineup. According to Google, the first Googlebooks are scheduled to reach U.S. customers on Oct. 4, and the category is aimed primarily at Android users who regularly move between their smartphones and laptops.
Google announced the pre-order opening on X on September 21:

The launch marks Google's latest attempt to establish a premium laptop platform following the Pixelbook in 2017 and the Pixelbook Go in 2019. The Pixelbook line was later discontinued, making Googlebook the company's first new premium laptop platform since the Pixelbook Go. While the earlier Pixelbook machines were ChromeOS devices, Googlebook shifts to an Android-based foundation. Unlike lower-priced Chromebooks, Googlebook targets buyers willing to pay more for stronger hardware and deeper AI features.
Gemini Moves Directly Into the Laptop
Googlebook is built on the Android technology stack combined with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. That combination allows Android apps, web apps and Linux tools to run on the devices while maintaining close integration with Android phones. Google says the approach is meant to give the laptops desktop-style versatility without breaking the connection to Android phones.
One of the headline AI features is Magic Pointer. Users can hover the cursor over text or images and ask Gemini for assistance without first copying content into a separate chatbot window. Gemini can also help draft and organize text and answer questions about whatever is already displayed on the screen. The design makes AI assistance available in the flow of everyday work rather than behind a separate app.
The company also said users will be able to pick up tasks started on an Android phone when they switch to a Googlebook, a cross-device continuity feature built for people who regularly work across phones and laptops.
The devices will also include dedicated AI processing hardware, with neural processing units (NPUs) capable of more than 45 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). That figure clears the 40 TOPS threshold Microsoft set for its Copilot+ PC category, which anchors the current generation of AI-focused Windows laptops. Depending on the model, Googlebooks can feature touchscreens, OLED displays, haptic trackpads and premium materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.
Google is bundling 12 months of Google AI Pro with every Googlebook, a package that includes Gemini Advanced and 5TB of cloud storage Once the included 12 months run out, continued access to those features requires a paid Google AI Pro subscription, tying the hardware sale to Google's broader subscription business.
Google Takes Aim at the Premium Laptop Market
The new category increases Google's competition with Apple and Windows laptop makers. Apple recently introduced its $699 MacBook Neo, giving consumers another lower-cost entry point into a premium laptop ecosystem, priced $200 below Googlebook's $899 starting point.
Google said Googlebook will sit alongside Chromebooks rather than replace them. Chromebooks will continue to target schools, businesses and lower-cost customers, while Googlebook leans more heavily into premium hardware and Android integration.
The strategy also gives Google another distribution channel for Gemini. If Googlebook gains adoption, Alphabet could deepen user engagement with its AI tools across search, productivity, cloud storage and Android.
There is still a caveat for investors. Google has not disclosed sales targets or the expected financial contribution from Googlebook, and the premium laptop market is already highly competitive. Google also relies heavily on hardware partners rather than controlling the entire product stack, which could make it harder to deliver a consistent premium experience across every model.
For Monday, however, the launch adds another visible consumer AI product to Alphabet's lineup. Googlebook pre-orders are now open starting at $899, with the first devices due in U.S. stores on Oct. 4 — the category's first concrete checkpoint in the market.
