Erin Scavino 是 President Donald Trump 的盟友，如今負責國務院的 Art in Embassies 計畫，她也是批評這幅畫為「woke」的人之一。Scavino 曾是實境節目「The Apprentice」的參賽者，而該節目在 2000 年代由 Trump 主持。她在前白宮新聞秘書 Sean Spicer 的 podcast 受訪時為移除行動辯護說：「It was very woke. It was by the gentleman who did Obama's portrait, and it was aesthetically terrifying.」
The Daily Beast 在 X，前稱 Twitter 上發文：「The State Department has removed a painting by an Obama portrait artist from a U.S. embassy, with the Trump goon running the agency's art operation trashing the piece as 'very woke' and 'aesthetically terrifying.'」

Shore 告訴 New York Times：「Calling this woke is difficult for me to understand. This is a program validated and financially backed under Bush. There is a science of building trust and empathy across borders.」
Kimmins 將這次移除描述為「just the latest salvo in a scorched-earth campaign to reshape the embassy art program, an initiative dating back to the Kennedy administration.」
