УЕФА прекратит бойкот ФИФА и усилит переговоры по Инфантино на жеребьёвке Лиги чемпионов

Uefa will use a gathering of continental chiefs at tomorrow’s Champions League draw to end its boycott of Fifa events and discuss its next steps in the bid to remove Gianni Infantino.

Europe’s governing body will hold a meeting in Monaco with its executive committee and the heads of national FAs before the draw for the league phase of its flagship club competition, using the event to reset a dispute that has already spilled into international tournament planning.

The expected outcome is that Uefa will drop its boycott of Fifa events after receiving the assurances it wanted that the controversial plan to partly privatise the World Cup will not be revived.

That decision would allow England and other Uefa members to take part in the Women’s Under-20 World Cup, which Fifa is staging in Poland from next week, and would reduce the practical disruption created by the stand-off at a time when several federations are preparing for the competition.

However, the high-level summit is also expected to include another round of discussions on how best to remove Fifa president Infantino, who has resisted calls to resign over the sell-off row.

Uefa has built an alliance with its counterparts in the AFC and Concacaf, which represent Asia and Central and North America and the Caribbean respectively.

Together, the three confederations theoretically control a majority of Fifa’s 211 member associations, although some countries, including Qatar and Mexico, have broken ranks to back Infantino. He also retains strong support in Africa and South America.

Infantino still without a challenger for Fifa election

Infantino has said he intends to stand for re-election early next year, and no rival candidate has yet emerged.

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin ruled out running this week. Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is currently thought to be among the most likely figures to oppose Infantino.

The proposal to sell minority stakes in a new company that would control the commercial rights to the World Cup triggered a major backlash across football when it leaked earlier this month.

The investment, which would have raised $4.2bn, was set to be led by Joshua Kushner, a member of Donald Trump’s extended family through Infantino’s ally, and who has since emerged as the surprise new co-owner of NBA franchise the LA Lakers.

This week, former players have also sought to shape the debate over Infantino. A group led by Mikael Silvestre called for him to go, while others, mostly from Argentina and Brazil, backed the Swiss Fifa president.

The England squad for the Women’s Under-20 World Cup is due to travel to Poland on Monday and play its first match against Canada in Bielsko-Biala on Saturday 5 September.

The Champions League draw will feature five English teams — Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United — and is due to take place at 5pm UK time.
