Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers in Indian equities after a brief selling spell, investing ₹480 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) added ₹236 crore. The return of FII buying is notable given that foreign investors had been net sellers in recent sessions amid global rate uncertainty and shifting allocations across emerging markets.
The Sensex fell 456 points to close at 78,499, while the Nifty50 declined 65 points to 24,571, slipping below the 24,600 mark. The Nifty Bank index lost 317 points to settle at 57,746. Friday's adjustments following the Cash Adjustment Settlement (CAS) were the lowest recorded during the week, with the Nifty adjusting by 14 points, the Sensex by seven points, and the Nifty Bank by 57 points.
Major Drags
Bajaj Finance was the session's biggest laggard, dropping 6% after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a draft proposal affecting the company. The RBI has been steadily tightening its regulatory framework for NBFCs, including higher risk weights on certain loans, making any new draft proposal potentially significant for sector leaders. Bajaj Finserv declined in sympathy, and other non-banking financial company (NBFC) stocks also traded lower. Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank ranked among the most significant drags on the Nifty.
Market breadth was marginally in favor of declining stocks. However, the Nifty Midcap index bucked the broader trend, gaining 137 points to close at 63,464, reflecting continued investor appetite for mid-sized companies even as large-caps faltered.
Among individual stocks, Trent extended losses from Thursday. ICICI Bank, Jio Financial Services, and Axis Bank were among the top losers.
Notable Gainers
Hindalco and State Bank of India (SBI) ended higher after both companies reported better-than-expected earnings for the June quarter, results that are being closely watched as India's Q1 FY25 earnings season progresses.
Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals fell 7% despite delivering quarterly results broadly in line with expectations. Blue Star continued its decline following weak earnings, while Godrej Consumer Products slipped 3% despite posting better-than-anticipated results.
Samvardhana Motherson surged 9% after management highlighted new growth opportunities. PG Electroplast rose 3% following an upward revision of its margin guidance, and Hero MotoCorp added another 3% after the company reaffirmed a healthy outlook for FY27.
