De kabelnieuwswereld werd opgeschud door een grote ontwikkeling toen bekend werd dat Maria Bartiromo Fox News Media ging verlaten. Bartiromo's advocaat, Bryan Freedman, ontkende berichten dat de langdurige Fox Business-presentatrice was ontslagen en noemde die berichten "onverantwoordelijk". Volgens Daily Beast-verslaggever Josh Fiallo dreigt Freedman nu met "een juridische confrontatie".

Bartiromo, die bij CNBC bekend werd met verslaggeving over Wall Street voordat ze in 2014 naar Fox overstapte, behoort al lang tot de meest herkenbare gezichten van de financiële televisie. Fiallo schreef in de Daily Beast: "Bryan Freedman said reports that the longtime host was fired by the network are untrue and irresponsible. Fox said, in a statement of its own on Thursday, that 'Maria Bartiromo is no longer with Fox News Media.' Freedman claims he has the receipts to prove Bartiromo, who worked at the network for 12 years, was not abruptly fired — though he declined to provide the supposed proof in an explosive statement sent to the Daily Beast."

In een verklaring gerapporteerd door de Daily Mail zei Freedman: "The irresponsible reports that have been published stating that Maria Bartiromo was fired or is no longer an employee of Fox are absolutely and unequivocally false. Make no mistake, we have the receipts and witnesses, and they will come out whether through the courthouse or otherwise … Those reporting her firing or the incredulous facts supporting that fiction have exhibited a complete and utter reckless disregard for the truth."

Freedman ontkent berichten dat Bartiromo bij Fox News Media zou zijn ontslagen omdat ze interne informatie met president Donald Trump deelde.

"Maria Bartiromo is widely regarded as one of President Donald Trump's favorite hosts at Fox News," aldus Fiallo in de Beast. "He even appointed her to the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The incident in question occurred in July after the president's crackpot primetime address in which he claimed that China interfered in the 2020 presidential election."

De gerapporteerde beschuldiging dat Bartiromo het Witte Huis informeerde over interne Fox-richtlijnen rond verkiezingsbeweringen raakt een gevoelige snaar bij het netwerk, dat in 2023 787 miljoen dollar betaalde om de smaadzaak van Dominion Voting Systems over de berichtgeving over beweringen van verkiezingsfraude in 2020 te schikken — een zaak waarin Bartiromo een van de presentatoren was van wie de uitzendingen werden aangehaald.

Volgens Fiallo: "Sources told Mediaite that the supposed leak was 'not the only reason' that Bartiromo got the ax, claiming that there was a 'confluence of factors,' like editorial disagreements over the direction of her shows."

Fiallo voegde daaraan toe dat de site ook meldt dat haar vertrek bij Fox velen niet verraste en dat haar team sinds augustus "in paniek" is over de toekomst van haar programma's. In juni moest Bartiromo een gênante verontschuldiging op televisie uitbrengen nadat "Shark Tank"-ster Kevin O'Leary een ongegronde bewering over China deed in haar programma.

Fiallo wees erop dat het "vertrek van Bartiromo, 58, volgde nadat zij drie weken mysterieus van het scherm was verdwenen".

"Sources told Status that she was fired from the network because she had informed the White House about Fox's secret instructions not to promote President Donald Trump's election conspiracies on the air," rapporteerde Fiallo.

Trump was niet blij met het nieuws van Bartiromo's vertrek.

Op zijn platform Truth Social plaatste de president: "I can't believe Maria Bartiromo is no longer going to have her great show(s) on Fox News/Business. Three different shows, always number one. Maria is a total professional, and a true warrior. Her fans, of which there are many, will not be happy. God bless you, Maria!"

Hoe het geschil wordt beslecht — in de rechtszaal of via een private schikking — kan afhangen van het bewijs waarover Freedman zegt te beschikken maar dat hij nog niet openbaar heeft gemaakt.
