2GO GROUP, Inc. said it handled 2.5 million metric tons (MT) of cargo to and from Mindanao last year.
The company serves ports in Cagayan de Oro, Ozamiz, Butuan, Dipolog, Davao, General Santos, and Zamboanga, it said in a media release on Thursday.
The volume underlines the role of interisland shipping in Mindanao's economy. The island group is a major source of the country's farm and fishery output — General Santos is a center of the Philippine tuna industry, while the Davao region leads national banana production — and reaching buyers in Luzon and the Visayas, as well as export gateways, depends on sea links such as those 2GO operates.
Its forwarding network includes 93 distribution hubs and warehouses nationwide, 18 of which are in Mindanao, coverage that affects how directly goods move between the island's producers and major markets.
2GO Travel also operates 36 passenger routes nationwide, 18 of which provide links to Mindanao. The media release did not indicate plans to expand the Mindanao network.
“Connectivity is not merely about moving goods and passengers. It is about enabling commerce, expanding access, attracting investments, and strengthening communities,” 2GO Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer William Charles Howell said.
2GO said its freight, logistics, and travel network supports industries in Mindanao and that stronger links to wider markets could help the region attract investments.
“Connectivity ties these growth drivers together by linking farmers to markets, manufacturers to customers, exporters to gateways, and communities to new economic opportunities,” the company said.
For shippers in an archipelagic economy, carrier reach and hub coverage are key factors in logistics planning, since freight moving between islands travels largely by sea. 2GO Forwarding handles about 1.5 million packages, or about 150,000 transactions, per year, it added.
2GO is an end-to-end transportation, logistics, and distribution provider under SM Investments Corp. (SMIC), which holds a 67.2% effective ownership stake in the company. — Ashley Erika O. Jose
