La debolezza politica del presidente Donald Trump ha portato alcuni esperti politici a discutere la possibilità che i Democratici possano conquistare la Camera dei Rappresentanti, il Senato o entrambi. Ma lo stratega repubblicano anti-Trump Steve Schmidt ha avvertito che i Democratici potrebbero comunque essere indeboliti da quella che ha descritto come incompetenza ai vertici dell’organizzazione del partito.

La critica è rivolta al Democratic National Committee, l’organismo nazionale del partito responsabile della raccolta fondi, dei dati sugli elettori, del sostegno organizzativo e di altre infrastrutture da cui i candidati dipendono durante cicli elettorali competitivi. Nelle sfide serrate per Camera e Senato, queste funzioni possono incidere sulla rapidità con cui un partito riesce a registrare elettori, rispondere agli attacchi e spostare risorse negli Stati chiave.

“The Democratic National Committee is failing every person reading these words,” ha scritto domenica Schmidt, che fu consigliere del presidente George W. Bush, sul suo Substack. “You should be very angry about it because that failure is neither providential nor pre-ordained. It’s a choice — like Trump — and it’s killing the United States of America.”

Schmidt ha indicato le difficoltà finanziarie del partito, scrivendo che “the MAGA Republicans have more than $128.5 million cash on hand compared to the Democratic National Committee, which is more than $2 million in debt. It’s also on track to spend exponentially more money on politics in Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Marianas, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa than across Mississippi and Louisiana, both of which have great US Senate candidates.”

Ha aggiunto: “It’s unacceptable. The DNC is terribly led by Chairman Ken Martin. A sign of the political ineptitude of both [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer and [House Minority Leader] Hakeem Jeffries is their inability to deal with what must be dealt with.”

Schmidt ha citato anche un articolo del New York Times che ha esaminato i problemi del partito. Secondo il resoconto, per quanto riguarda le difficoltà dei Democratici, “at the center is Ken Martin, the 53-year-old party chairman, who has found himself increasingly isolated, gripped by the fear that he will lose his job and relying on a vanishingly small circle of people he trusts, according to interviews with more than two dozen Democrats, including current and former D.N.C. officials and members. Most of them spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the party’s troubled state of affairs.”

Il Times ha inoltre riferito: “Mr. Martin’s fraying nerves are showing. In a pique of frustration in early July, he threw his phone at the desk of a junior aide while upbraiding the person. The phone-tossing incident resulted in a formal complaint to the D.N.C.’s human resources department.”

Schmidt ha criticato la condotta attribuita a Martin e, più in generale, lo stato della leadership democratica, scrivendo che “personally, I’m sick of the tolerance for losing and the Democratic Party mediocrities, careerists and hustlers who can’t, won’t, and will never stop losing because deep down they’re simply doing what they’re good at: losing.”

Ha proseguito: “The problem is that we’re losing the country because it isn’t being properly defended by the institution that’s built to stand up to MAGA and be for something better. It’s one of the foremost tragedies of this whole era. It’s deeply true and very real.”

AlterNet ha già riferito in precedenza delle critiche alla gestione di Martin. A giugno, fonti anonime di alto livello del DNC hanno detto ad AlterNet che Martin non si era preparato agli attacchi di Trump contro il voto per corrispondenza, aveva gestito male la pubblicazione di un’analisi post mortem della fallita campagna presidenziale del partito nel 2024 e si era rifiutato di affrontare in modo adeguato le minacce alla sicurezza del voto sulle macchine elettroniche.

Quelle critiche sono arrivate nonostante il DNC avesse riconosciuto che “any assessment of the state of technology in the Democratic party would be incomplete without an acknowledgement that comprehensive data warehouses like Phoenix represent an irresistible target for hackers and other bad actors seeking to undermine the integrity of the modern political process.” Il riconoscimento evidenzia perché i dibattiti sull’infrastruttura del partito vadano oltre la comunicazione e lo stile di leadership: le campagne moderne dipendono fortemente da archivi elettorali centralizzati, analisi dei dati e sistemi digitali che devono essere al tempo stesso efficaci per l’organizzazione e resilienti contro interferenze esterne.
