I 16th Philstage Gawad Buhay awards — ampiamente considerati l’equivalente filippino dei Tony Awards — hanno premiato un ampio ventaglio di produzioni teatrali martedì sera, con Kisapmata di Tanghalang Pilipino in testa alla cerimonia con 11 premi. Shrek the Musical di Full House Theater Company ha seguito con sei.

Kisapmata ha ottenuto i riconoscimenti più prestigiosi della serata, tra cui Outstanding Play – Original or Translation/Adaptation, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Play (Guelan Varela-Luarca), Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Play, e sia il Male Lead Performance in a Play sia il Female Lead Performance in a Play per Jonathan Tadioan e Lhorvie Nuevo-Tadioan.

Ricevendo il premio come vincitore per la prima volta del Gawad Buhay, il signor Tadioan ha detto: "Ang parangal na ito ay nagpapaalala sa akin na ang ating ginagawa ay may kapangyarihang panatilihing buhay ang mga kuwento, at patuloy na lumaban sa kung ano ang tama at dapat. Ipagpatuloy ang pagkukuwento ng mga kuwentong may saysay at nagbibigay-inspirasyon (This award reminds me that what we do has the power to keep stories alive and allows us to continuously fight for what is right. Let us continue to tell meaningful and inspiring stories)."

Kisapmata è un adattamento teatrale del film del 1981 di Mike De Leon dello stesso titolo, che racconta di un patriarca possessivo che si rifiuta di liberare la figlia dal suo controllo oppressivo sulla famiglia. Il film originale, diretto da uno dei cineasti più acclamati delle Filippine, è considerato una pietra miliare del cinema filippino e trae a sua volta ispirazione da un fatto di cronaca reale. Tanghalang Pilipino, la compagnia teatrale residente del Cultural Center of the Philippines, ha presentato in anteprima la produzione teatrale nel marzo 2025.

Shrek the Musical, prodotto da Full House Theater Company, è stato un altro grande vincitore della serata, conquistando sei premi. Tra i riconoscimenti figurano Outstanding Production for Children, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical (Dexter Santos), e sia il Male Lead Performance in a Musical sia il Male Featured Performance in a Musical per Jamie Wilson e Topper Fabregas, rispettivamente. Il musical comico-fantastico, basato sul film d’animazione DreamWorks e sul libro di William Steig, segue la storia dell’orco Shrek.

Non potendo ritirare di persona il premio alla regia, il signor Santos ha condiviso su Facebook il suo messaggio di ringraziamento: "May our theater community continue to grow. Not only through directors, actors, and designers, but also through playwrights, composers, choreographers, musicians, producers, stage managers, technicians, critics, scholars, cultural workers, and everyone who quietly keeps this art form alive."

"Most of all, may our audiences continue to find their way to the theater," ha aggiunto. "We will continue to tell stories with honesty, generosity, and hope, and to celebrate the beautiful mystery and the fleeting power that only live theater can offer."

La cerimonia, tenutasi il July 28 all’Aliw Theater, è stata condotta da Reb Atadero e ha incluso numeri musicali del cast di Come From Away di Stages, che ha vinto due premi tra cui Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical; del cast di Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical di Tanghalang Pilipino, che ha ottenuto quattro premi tra cui Outstanding Musical – Original or Translation/Adaptation; e del cast di Side Show, che ha conquistato due premi tra cui Female Lead in a Musical per Marynor Madamesila.
