La 16.ª edición de los Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards —considerados ampliamente como el equivalente filipino de los premios Tony— galardonó a una amplia variedad de producciones teatrales en la noche del martes, con Kisapmata de Tanghalang Pilipino dominando la ceremonia con 11 premios. Shrek the Musical de Full House Theater Company le siguió con seis.

Kisapmata se llevó los honores más prestigiosos de la noche, incluido Outstanding Play – Original or Translation/Adaptation, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Play (Guelan Varela-Luarca), Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Play, así como Male and Female Lead Performance in a Play para Jonathan Tadioan y Lhorvie Nuevo-Tadioan, respectivamente.

Al recibir su premio como ganador por primera vez en los Gawad Buhay, el Sr. Tadioan declaró: «Ang parangal na ito ay nagpapaalala sa akin na ang ating ginagawa ay may kapangyarihang panatilihing buhay ang mga kuwento, at patuloy na lumaban sa kung ano ang tama at dapat. Ipagpatuloy ang pagkukuwento ng mga kuwentong may saysay at nagbibigay-inspirasyon (This award reminds me that what we do has the power to keep stories alive and allows us to continuously fight for what is right. Let us continue to tell meaningful and inspiring stories).»

Kisapmata es una adaptación teatral de la película homónima de Mike De Leon de 1981, que gira en torno a un patriarca posesivo que se niega a liberar a su hija de su control opresivo sobre el hogar. La película original, dirigida por uno de los cineastas más aclamados de Filipinas, es considerada un hito del cine filipino y se inspiró en un caso criminal real. Tanghalang Pilipino, la compañía de teatro residente del Cultural Center of the Philippines, estrenó la producción teatral en marzo de 2025.

Shrek the Musical, producida por Full House Theater Company, fue otra de las grandes ganadoras de la noche, con seis premios. Sus galardones incluyeron Outstanding Production for Children, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical (Dexter Santos), y Male Lead y Male Featured Performance in a Musical para Jamie Wilson y Topper Fabregas, respectivamente. Este musical de comedia y fantasía, basado en la película animada de DreamWorks y en el libro de William Steig, narra la historia de Shrek, el ogro.

Al no poder recibir su premio de dirección en persona, el Sr. Santos compartió su gratitud en Facebook: «May our theater community continue to grow. Not only through directors, actors, and designers, but also through playwrights, composers, choreographers, musicians, producers, stage managers, technicians, critics, scholars, cultural workers, and everyone who quietly keeps this art form alive.»

«Most of all, may our audiences continue to find their way to the theater», añadió. «We will continue to tell stories with honesty, generosity, and hope, and to celebrate the beautiful mystery and the fleeting power that only live theater can offer.»

La ceremonia, celebrada el 28 de julio en el Aliw Theater, fue conducida por Reb Atadero. Se presentaron números musicales de los elencos de varias producciones nominadas: Come From Away de Stages, que ganó dos premios incluido Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical; Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical de Tanghalang Pilipino, que obtuvo cuatro premios incluido Outstanding Musical – Original or Translation/Adaptation; y Side Show, que se llevó dos premios incluido Female Lead in a Musical para Marynor Madamesila.

Los nominados y ganadores son seleccionados por un panel de jueces a partir de las producciones elegibles montadas por las compañías miembro de Philstage. Philstage, una coalición de grupos teatrales profesionales del país, estableció los Gawad Buhay —cuyo nombre se traduce como «award for life»— para reconocer la excelencia en las temporadas de sus organizaciones miembro.
