The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has called for stronger support for green methanol bunkering in Hong Kong.

The proposal forms part of Towngas’s recommendations for Hong Kong’s first five-year plan, which covers the period through 2030, the company said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.

Towngas said Hong Kong should support low-carbon shipping and develop into a green commodities trading and finance hub, with green methanol bunkering among the areas to be advanced. The push places Hong Kong’s maritime and fuel infrastructure in the broader context of the city’s planned transition toward cleaner shipping services and related green finance activity.

The company also proposed establishing an “Energy Office” to lead new energy policy and prioritize the commercialization of green methanol, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.

Other suggestions include creating a green certification hub, developing zero-carbon industrial parks and strengthening cooperation among industry, universities and research institutions.

Towngas said the plan is intended to guide Hong Kong’s development over the next five years, making the proposals part of a longer policy and infrastructure planning window rather than a short-term project list.

Earlier this year, Towngas announced an MoU with a Sinopec unit to explore green methanol supply for shipping and other projects.
