TotalEnergies has completed a 4.1-MW solar and 1.55-MWh battery storage installation at Sonoma State University (SSU), marking one of the largest combined solar-plus-storage systems in Sonoma County, California. The project illustrates how institutions in the state's largest four-year public university system are translating statewide clean energy mandates into on-campus infrastructure.
The project supports the California State University (CSU) system's system-wide commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045, aligning with California's own target under SB 100 for 100% clean retail electricity by the same year. The installation further expands TotalEnergies' decade-long partnership with CSU to modernize energy infrastructure across its 23-campus system, which serves more than 460,000 students.
"Sonoma State University's investment in solar infrastructure is a meaningful example of how CSU campuses are advancing the system's broader goal of carbon neutrality by 2045," said Lindsey Rowell, chief of energy, sustainability and transportation in the California State University Office of the Chancellor. "TotalEnergies has been a significant partner in this work, supporting more than 30% of the CSU's solar projects across our 22 campuses."

The solar carports span five campus parking lots and are projected to generate more than 7.9 million kWh of clean energy in their first year of operation, while also providing shade and shelter for parked vehicles. Carport installations have become an increasingly common approach for campuses and commercial sites seeking to expand solar capacity without dedicating additional land. The battery storage system is estimated to save the university over $5 million in utility costs during its first five years.
The system features advanced microgrid-ready capabilities, enabling it to seamlessly isolate from the grid during localized Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), which are common in California, to ensure that critical campus infrastructure remains fully operational. PSPS events, primarily implemented by utilities such as Pacific Gas & Electric in Northern California during high-fire-risk conditions, have driven growing demand for on-site storage and islanding capabilities across institutional and commercial sites.
Beyond energy generation and storage, the installation functions as a hands-on educational resource. SSU faculty and students are using the infrastructure as a living laboratory to analyze real-time clean energy data, deepening their practical understanding of the evolving energy landscape.
"Projects of this scale are complex and often take years to move from concept to completion," said Dana Twedell, SSU's associate vice president for facilities operations and planning. "TotalEnergies was a collaborative and responsive partner, working closely with us to navigate challenges and bring the project across the finish line."
Under a structured power purchase agreement (PPA), TotalEnergies fully financed, designed, and constructed the solar and storage system at no upfront cost to SSU. The university purchases the clean energy generated at a rate below local utility prices, while TotalEnergies handles all ongoing operations, performance monitoring, and maintenance. PPAs have become a standard financing mechanism for U.S. higher-education solar deployments, allowing institutions to access lower energy costs without capital outlay or operational burden.
By avoiding capital expenditure, SSU was able to direct its funds toward critical campus infrastructure and core educational needs. The utility savings generated by the project are being redirected into the university's Green Revolving Fund to support students, research, and academic excellence.
