Global marine fuel supplier and trading firm Peninsula has pointed to the growing availability of bio-LNG as a key factor supporting broader adoption among LNG-fuelled vessels, describing it as a compelling option for reducing emissions.

As the maritime industry faces mounting regulatory pressure — including the International Maritime Organization's revised greenhouse gas strategy targeting net-zero emissions from international shipping by or around 2050 — ship operators are increasingly seeking fuels that deliver near-term emissions cuts without requiring newbuild orders or costly retrofits. Bio-LNG has emerged as one of several lower-carbon alternatives gaining traction alongside methanol and ammonia, though its compatibility with existing LNG infrastructure gives it a distinct advantage for the current LNG-fuelled fleet.

In an article published on its website on Tuesday, Peninsula emphasized that bio-LNG produced from certified waste-based feedstocks can achieve lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of up to 90% compared with conventional marine fuels. The company noted that the fuel can be handled through existing LNG bunkering infrastructure and used in LNG dual-fuel engines without requiring major vessel modifications, making it an immediately accessible lower-carbon alternative — particularly relevant as the global LNG-fuelled fleet continues to grow and bunkering infrastructure is already established at major ports across Europe, Asia, and North America.
