Metalkol Completes Technical Acceptance of Customised Damen CSD500 for DRC Mining Operation

Author: Hellenic Shipping News·

Key Takeaways

  • Metalkol representatives completed technical inspection and signed a Technical Acceptance Protocol for the customised CSD500 dredger at Damen's facility in the Netherlands.
  • The standard CSD500 was customised with anchor booms, a spud carriage pontoon, an extended dredging depth of minus 16 metres, and a comprehensive dredging instrumentation package.
  • The dredger will be deployed in mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is Africa's largest copper producer and the world's leading cobalt source.
  • Damen's stock-building programme enabled full customisation of the CSD500 within weeks of the order being placed.
  • The modular dredger will be disassembled into transport-friendly modules to facilitate efficient delivery and reassembly at the remote inland mining concession in the DRC.

Representatives of Metalkol have successfully completed the technical inspection of their newly acquired Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 500 at the Damen Dredging yard in the Netherlands. Following extensive inspections and testing, the customised dredger was formally approved for delivery under a signed Technical Acceptance Protocol. The vessel will subsequently be transported to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it is slated for deployment in a mining operation. The DRC is Africa's largest copper producer and the world's leading source of cobalt, and dredgers of this type are commonly used in mining contexts for tasks such as tailings reclamation, alluvial mineral extraction, and maintaining water-based infrastructure at extraction sites.

Prior to acceptance, a standard stock CSD500 was configured to meet the specific requirements of the project using a range of proven Damen options. These customisations include anchor booms for swing anchor handling, a spud carriage pontoon to increase the dredger's swing width, an extended dredging depth capability of −16 metres, a vacuum relief valve, a discharge valve, and a comprehensive package of dredging instrumentation. The extended depth and instrumentation package point to operations requiring precise excavation in challenging underwater conditions typical of mineral-processing environments.

Frederick Vandepitte, Damen Regional Director, commented on the project: "Our client required a state-of-the-art dredger suited to a remote location and high levels of uptime. We enjoyed a number of fruitful discussions as we worked towards a suitable solution that incorporated the requirements of the operations team. We are pleased that, due to our stock building programme, we have been able to fully customise the CSD within a few weeks of the order."

The CSD500 is part of Damen Shipyards Group's established cutter suction dredger lineup, designed for efficient excavation of compacted soils, sand, and gravel in inland waters, ports, and other shallow-draft environments. Damen's stock-building strategy involves manufacturing vessels to standardised specifications in advance, enabling short delivery lead times and rapid customisation once a client's requirements are defined.

Following the successful acceptance, the CSD500 is being prepared for transportation to Africa. In line with Damen's modular dredger concept, the vessel will be disassembled into transport-friendly modules, optimised for efficient transport by road and water, as well as straightforward reassembly at the mining site. The modular approach is particularly relevant for remote inland mining concessions in the DRC, where overland transport infrastructure can be limited and equipment must often be reassembled far from coastal ports.
