Maran Tankers Takes Delivery of Fourth LNG Dual-Fuel Suezmax

Maran Tankers, part of Greece's Angelicoussis Group, has taken delivery of the fourth LNG dual-fuel Suezmax oil tanker in its series.

The Angelicoussis Group is one of the largest privately owned shipping groups in the world, with its tanker arm complemented by LNG carriers under Maran Gas and dry bulk vessels under Maran Dry.

The 155,500 DWT vessel, named Maran Myrsini, was built by New Times Shipbuilding and sails under the Greek flag, Angelicoussis Group said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.

The newbuilding features an optimised hull, energy-saving devices, efficient boil-off gas management and a shaft generator, all designed to improve fuel efficiency. A shaft generator uses the vessel's main engine to produce electricity on board, reducing the need to run auxiliary engines. Boil-off gas management addresses the gas that naturally evaporates from a ship's LNG tanks so it can be put to use rather than wasted.

The delivery adds another energy-efficient vessel to Maran Tankers' fleet and supports the Angelicoussis Group's fleet renewal programme.

Suezmax tankers are mid-sized crude carriers named for the maximum size able to transit the Suez Canal fully laden, a class that typically spans roughly 120,000 to 160,000 DWT. At 155,500 DWT, Maran Myrsini sits at the upper end of that range.

Efficiency-focused newbuildings are arriving as shipping faces tightening emissions rules: the EU brought maritime CO2 into its Emissions Trading System from January 2024, its FuelEU Maritime regulation has limited the greenhouse gas intensity of ship energy since January 2025, and the IMO has set a goal of net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by or around 2050.

LNG is regarded as a more mature alternative marine fuel and is more widely available than other alternatives such as methanol. Dual-fuel engines give operators the flexibility to run on either LNG or conventional marine fuels.

While LNG emits less CO2 than conventional fuels, methane slip — the escape of unburned methane, a potent greenhouse gas — undermines part of the fuel's green credentials.
