Hercules Metals Brings In Executive Team Behind $2B Hudbay Deal to Advance Leviathan Copper Discovery

Author: The Northern Miner·

Key Takeaways

  • George Ogilvie will become president and CEO of Hercules Metals on September 1, accompanied by six former Arizona Sonoran Copper executives spanning finance, legal, permitting, investor relations, and geology.
  • The incoming leadership team previously grew Arizona Sonoran Copper from an implied value of roughly $125 million in 2021 to a $2-billion acquisition by Hudbay Minerals, representing approximately a 16-fold value increase.
  • The Leviathan copper discovery in Idaho has been traced for over 1 km along strike, up to 750 metres wide and 500 metres deep, with only about one-fifth of the target tested and mineralization remaining open.
  • Barrick Mining has provided financial backing and helped Hercules consolidate more than 404.7 sq. km along a 73-km copper belt, supporting potential for a district-scale copper play.
  • Hercules has not yet released a mineral resource estimate or economic study for Leviathan, making the upcoming maiden resource calculation a critical milestone for investors and potential acquirers.

Hercules Metals (TSXV: BIG; US-OTC: BADEF) has brought in the management team responsible for Arizona Sonoran Copper's $2-billion (US$1.4-billion) sale to Hudbay Minerals (TSX, NYSE: HBM), aiming to accelerate the advancement of its Leviathan copper discovery in Idaho toward development. The move comes as copper demand intensifies amid global electrification, grid modernization, and electric-vehicle manufacturing, prompting major miners to acquire advanced-stage copper assets.

George Ogilvie will assume the roles of president and CEO on September 1, arriving alongside six former Arizona Sonoran executives covering finance, legal affairs, permitting, investor relations, and resource geology. Company founder Chris Paul will transition to senior vice-president of exploration while remaining on the board of directors. The Leviathan project is located near Cambridge, Idaho, approximately a two-hour drive from Boise, the state capital. Idaho ranks among the top U.S. mining jurisdictions for copper and other metals, with an established regulatory framework and existing mining infrastructure.

"The project has now grown to a scale that requires a leadership team with top-tier mining experience, deep technical and capital-markets expertise, and a proven ability to transform major discoveries into high-value companies," Paul said in a Thursday release. "George and his team bring that combination of experience, execution and demonstrated success."

Over the past year, Hercules attracted investor interest as wide copper intercepts expanded the Leviathan deposit and drilling identified a second porphyry centre at Southern Flats. Barrick Mining (TSX: ABX; NYSE: B) provided backing and assisted in consolidating more than 404.7 sq. km along a 73-km copper belt, reinforcing the potential for a district-scale play rather than a single deposit. Hercules has not yet released a mineral resource estimate or economic study for Leviathan, giving the incoming leadership a clean slate. A maiden resource estimate will be a critical milestone for investors and potential acquirers evaluating the project's scale and grade.

Track Record of the Incoming Team

The group joining Hercules guided Arizona Sonoran from a private company with an implied value of approximately $125 million in 2021 to its acquisition by Hudbay in June — a roughly 16-fold increase in value. Along the way, the team raised more than $300 million to advance the Cactus project. The Hudbay acquisition was part of a broader wave of copper dealmaking as mid-tier and major producers seek to replenish declining reserves.

Cactus holds a September 2025 resource estimate of 1.04 billion measured and indicated tonnes grading 0.48% copper, containing 11 billion lb. of metal, plus 211.7 million inferred tonnes grading 0.37% copper for an additional 1.7 billion contained pounds.

Ogilvie, a mining engineer with 36 years of experience, previously led Battle North Gold through its 2021 sale to Evolution Mining (ASX: EVN). He also served as head of Kirkland Lake Gold and Rambler Metals and Mining.

Nicholas Nikolakakis will join as senior vice-president of finance and chief financial officer. Nicholas Hayduk will oversee corporate development and legal affairs, Travis Snider will lead sustainability and external relations, Alison Dwoskin will manage investor relations, Kevin Canario will become vice-president of finance, and Anthony Bottrill will serve as senior resource geologist.

Keith Li will step down as CFO on September 1 and remain available during the transition. Hercules granted the incoming group 18.65 million five-year options exercisable at 59¢, representing approximately 5.4% of outstanding shares. The options vest in equal thirds through September 2028.

Project Scale

Hercules discovered Leviathan in 2023 beneath an epithermal silver system. Discovery hole HER-23-05 intersected 185 metres grading 0.84% copper, 111 parts per million molybdenum, and 2.6 grams silver per tonne, including a higher-grade interval of 45 metres at 1.94% copper. The hole ended in mineralization.

Subsequent drilling traced the system for more than 1 km along strike, up to 750 metres in width, and through 500 metres vertically. Hercules estimates that only about one-fifth of the target has been tested, with mineralization remaining open in both directions. Porphyry copper deposits of this scale are among the most economically significant copper sources globally, typically supporting long-life, large-tonnage mining operations.

The company controls surface mining rights over the Leviathan area. Existing roads and three 260-kilovolt transmission lines cross the property.

Next Steps

Hercules is dividing responsibilities between exploration and project advancement. Paul will continue leading drilling programs to expand Leviathan and test additional porphyry targets, while Ogilvie's team will oversee resource definition, technical studies, permitting, and financing.

The arrangement keeps exploration under the guidance of the geologist who discovered Leviathan while placing project development in the hands of a team with a demonstrated record of advancing major mining projects.
