Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, reported a 3.4% year-on-year increase in raw coal production for July 2026, reaching approximately 2.45 million tonnes. The company also recorded a 4.6% rise in coking coal output during the same month. Coking coal is a critical raw material for steelmaking through the blast furnace route, and BCCL's output feeds directly into India's domestic steel supply chain.

Coal offtake — the volume of coal dispatched to customers — jumped 11% in July 2026 compared to the year-ago period, indicating stronger demand from end-users, primarily the steel and power sectors. India remains a major importer of coking coal despite domestic production efforts, and increased offtake from state-run producers like BCCL can help partially offset import dependence for steelmakers.

Despite the positive monthly performance, BCCL's cumulative production for the April–July 2026 period remained lower than the corresponding figure from the previous year. The company has been working to close this gap in the remaining months of the fiscal year.

BCCL, headquartered in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, is one of the largest producers of prime coking coal in India and operates largely in the Jharia coalfield, one of the country's most significant coal-bearing regions. The company is a key supplier of coking coal to the domestic steel industry. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited, the state-owned coal mining company that is the world's largest coal producer by volume.
