The Baltic Exchange has named Sigrid Teig, a shipping and technology executive, as its new deputy chief executive.
Teig joins the London-based freight market benchmark provider from maritime technology group Marcura, where she most recently served as director of strategic customer partnerships. She originally joined Marcura in Singapore in 2020 and has also held senior positions in the dry bulk sector.
Prior to her move into maritime technology, Teig spent several years with Western Bulk, including management roles based in Singapore. She subsequently worked independently, focusing on shipping process improvement.
Commenting on her appointment, Teig said: "It is an honour to join Baltic Exchange at such an exciting yet critical time for the global maritime sector. More than ever, our industry needs effective, reliable benchmarking data to navigate volatility, boost transparency and support the decision-making of shipping's stakeholders. Baltic Exchange has held an important role at the heart of the maritime industry for more than 280 years and it is a privilege to now be able to contribute to its legacy and drive it forward for the benefit of its members and the entire maritime industry."
The appointment comes as the Baltic Exchange, which is owned by Singapore Exchange (SGX), navigates a leadership transition. SGX acquired the Baltic Exchange in 2016, bringing the centuries-old institution under Asian ownership while retaining its London operational base. The organisation announced last October that chief executive Mark Jackson would remain with the Baltic, taking on a broader remit centred on strategic initiatives and product development.
Teig's technology-focused background reflects a broader push across the maritime sector toward digitalisation and data-driven decision-making, areas where the Baltic Exchange's benchmarks—including the widely tracked Baltic Dry Index—play a central role in freight contracts and shipping market analysis.
The Baltic Exchange, founded in 1744, is widely recognised as the leading independent source of maritime market data and benchmark freight rates for the shipping industry.
