Es ist wieder diese Jahreszeit, in der Live-Musik und andere darstellende Künste an Orten in den multikulturellen Vierteln Haebangchon und Gyeongnidan im Zentrum Seouls das Geschehen bestimmen.

Dieses Jahr findet Block Party bereits zum fünften Mal statt, vom 11. bis 13. Sept., und erneut steht Jamie Finn an der Spitze, der bei jeder Festivalplanung gleichermaßen Zuversicht und Schweißausbrüche ausstrahlt.

Das Festival findet in diesem Jahr an mehr als acht lokalen Spielstätten statt, darunter Uplift, Boogie Woogie, Casa Amigo, Pet Sounds, Sub Riot, Togul, Dialogue und Dankyard. Jedes Jahr ändert sich die Liste, wenn neue Orte öffnen und andere schließen – ein Zeichen für den Wandel des Viertels.

"It’s a bit weird, isn’t it?" sagte Finn, als er den Zustand von Haebangchon beschrieb. "Like it’s still Haebangchon, but it feels a bit uncanny. There’s loads of fun new fancy-pants restaurants, but where’s the dank? Block Party is a pro-dank festival, and we would like to see the dank return to Haebangchon."

Das Line-up von Block Party 2026 verbindet Favoriten früherer Ausgaben, darunter Leenalchi, Cadejo und Drinking Boys and Girls Choir, mit vielen neuen Acts wie Lang Lee, Chacha and the Cousins, Snake Chicken Soup und Skasucks.

"Lang Lee is a genius folk artist, a wonderful live performer, a staunch activist and quite possibly the coolest human being on the planet," sagte Finn.

Eine Handvoll Acts hat sich den Titel der "Block Party house bands" verdient, weil sie bei jeder Ausgabe gespielt haben: Pop Ents , 18Fevers, Pylat, Geoffrey Lewis und Yangbans. Finn wies darauf hin, dass auch einzelne Musiker auf dieser exklusiven Liste stehen könnten, selbst wenn sie jedes Jahr in anderen Bands auftreten.

"Jihyang has played Block Party like 10 times through various projects such as Hyangni, Goonam and DJ Jihyang. She’ll be back this year with MiMi Sisters," sagte er. "I also think Kimin has played every year, either with Gorymurgy or PCR."

Das Festival bietet in diesem Jahr auch eine hohe Zahl an internationalen Acts, darunter die legendäre australische Punkband The Hard-Ons, das italienische Duo Little Boys, die taiwanische reine Frauen-Punkband BB Bomb , die portugiesische Garageband 800 Gondomar und DJ Lukey No-Wave aus dem U.K.

Zum Festival gehören zudem verschiedene Nicht-Musik-Programmpunkte, darunter Drag, Magie, Pro-Wrestling und Comedy sowie Kunst von Hechyeomoyeo.

Finn führte die hervorragend vielfältige Auswahl auf den Wechsel in seinem Team ehrenamtlicher Organisatoren zurück.

"We have a totally new team this year, and with that comes a bunch of new perspectives. They’re bringing their weird tastes to the festival, so I think the lineup this year is more diverse than any other year," sagte er.

"Every year the team behind Block Party changes — once is enough for most people. This year, we have four people planning the event — myself, Ethan Kim, Jia Seok and Glassgirl, who will also be performing at this year’s event. If anyone would like to help me plan Block Party 2027, please let me know. The pay is shit but on the plus side, the work is hard."

Das diesjährige Block Party-Team arbeitet außerdem mit Haebang Week zusammen, die weitere Veranstaltungen geplant hat. Auch das Itaewon Film Festival, nun im zweiten Jahr, schließt sich offiziell an.

Auf die Frage nach den Geheimnissen hinter dem Erfolg und der Nachhaltigkeit von Block Party über fünf Jahre hinweg wollte Finn nicht viel sagen.

"To be honest, we’re still working on the 'successful' and 'sustainable' thing. Every year is an absolute crapshoot, but we’re getting closer," sagte er.

"But in terms of being an event that people know about and want to go to year after year, then I guess you could say it is 'successful' and it’s a really great feeling. I think the reason people resonate with Block Party so much is that it is quite different to other festivals in Korea. We have more variety of performances, everything is a little messier and a little crazier, and we have a bigger focus on atmosphere and experience. Also, we go much later at night. We build our lineups around having a good time."

Jedes Jahr frage ich Finn, ob es im nächsten Jahr eine Block Party geben wird. Jedes Mal sagte er, es werde das letzte Jahr sein – bis er im vergangenen Jahr signalisierte, dass er zu dieser Ausgabe bereit sei. Wird es also 2027 eine sechste Block Party geben?

"No," sagte Finn. "This is the last one."
