Die 16. Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards — weithin als Philippinen-Pendant zu den Tony Awards angesehen — ehrten am Dienstagabend eine breite Auswahl an Bühnenproduktionen, wobei Tanghalang Pilipinos Kisapmata die Zeremonie mit 11 Auszeichnungen dominierte. Full House Theater Companys Shrek the Musical folgte mit sechs.

Kisapmata sicherte sich die prestigeträchtigsten Ehrungen des Abends, darunter Outstanding Play – Original or Translation/Adaptation, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Play (Guelan Varela-Luarca), Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Play sowie sowohl Female als auch Male Lead Performance in a Play für Jonathan Tadioan und Lhorvie Nuevo-Tadioan.

Bei der Entgegennahme seiner Auszeichnung als erstmaliger Gawad-Buhay-Gewinner sagte Herr Tadioan: "Ang parangal na ito ay nagpapaalala sa akin na ang ating ginagawa ay may kapangyarihang panatilihing buhay ang mga kuwento, at patuloy na lumaban sa kung ano ang tama at dapat. Ipagpatuloy ang pagkukuwento ng mga kuwentong may saysay at nagbibigay-inspirasyon (This award reminds me that what we do has the power to keep stories alive and allows us to continuously fight for what is right. Let us continue to tell meaningful and inspiring stories)."

Kisapmata ist eine Bühnenadaption von Mike De Leons Film aus dem Jahr 1981 mit demselben Titel, der von einem besitzergreifenden Patriarchen handelt, der seine Tochter nicht aus seiner tyrannischen Kontrolle über den Haushalt entlassen will. Tanghalang Pilipino, die Residenztheatergruppe des Cultural Center of the Philippines, brachte die Bühnenproduktion im März 2025 zur Premiere.

Shrek the Musical, produziert von Full House Theater Company, war ein weiterer großer Gewinner des Abends und gewann sechs Auszeichnungen. Zu den Ehrungen zählten Outstanding Production for Children, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical (Dexter Santos) sowie sowohl Male Lead als auch Male Featured Performance in a Musical für Jamie Wilson beziehungsweise Topper Fabregas. Das Comedy-Fantasy-Musical, basierend auf dem DreamWorks-Animationsfilm und dem Buch von William Steig, erzählt die Geschichte des Ogers Shrek.

Da er seine Regieauszeichnung nicht persönlich entgegennehmen konnte, teilte Herr Santos auf Facebook seine Dankbarkeit: "May our theater community continue to grow. Not only through directors, actors, and designers, but also through playwrights, composers, choreographers, musicians, producers, stage managers, technicians, critics, scholars, cultural workers, and everyone who quietly keeps this art form alive."

"Most of all, may our audiences continue to find their way to the theater," fügte er hinzu. "We will continue to tell stories with honesty, generosity, and hope, and to celebrate the beautiful mystery and the fleeting power that only live theater can offer."

Die Preisverleihung, die am July 28 im Aliw Theater stattfand, wurde von Reb Atadero moderiert und bot Musiknummern der Besetzungen mehrerer nominierter Produktionen: Stages’ Come From Away, das zwei Auszeichnungen gewann, darunter Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical; Tanghalang Pilipinos Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical, das vier Preise erhielt, darunter Outstanding Musical – Original or Translation/Adaptation; sowie Side Show, das zwei Auszeichnungen gewann, darunter Female Lead in a Musical für Marynor Madamesila.

Die Nominierten und Gewinner werden von einer Jury aus einer Liste förderfähiger Produktionen ausgewählt, die von Philstage-Mitgliedsunternehmen auf die Bühne gebracht wurden. Philstage, eine Vereinigung der professionellen Theatergruppen des Landes, hat die Gawad Buhay — deren Name mit "award for life" übersetzt wird — ins Leben gerufen, um herausragende Leistungen über die Spielzeiten seiner Mitgliedsorganisationen hinweg zu würdigen.
