  • Игра Shiba Story Go!

Blockchain game developer Proof of Play will cease operations after failing to build a sustainable business around its decentralized gaming thesis, the studio announced Tuesday.

Backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Proof of Play said it was unable to develop a product that demonstrated blockchain-based games could help usher in a decentralized internet at scale. The company will wind down operations and open-source much of its code and artwork, including the Pirate Nation game, associated smart contracts, and internal software-development tools.

In a statement shared on X, the studio outlined its wind-down plans:

Proof of Play said the independent Pirate Nation Foundation will continue supporting the PIRATE token and keep the game's website operational. However, Proof of Play points will no longer be redeemable for anything.

The studio also released the artwork and intellectual property associated with the Founder Pirates non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the Pirate Nation game under a CC0 license, effectively placing them in the public domain. CC0 is a Creative Commons designation that waives all copyright interests, allowing anyone to use, modify, and distribute the material freely. The open-source and CC0 releases follow a pattern seen in other Web3 project closures, where code and assets are made public to enable community members or other developers to continue building independently.

Additionally, Proof of Play's Shiba Story Go! game was acquired by an unidentified third party and will continue operating independently under new ownership.

At their peak, Proof of Play's Apex and Boss networks — both part of Ethereum's layer-2 rollup ecosystem — were the two largest gas consumers tracked across the entire rollup landscape. Ethereum rollups are scaling solutions built on top of the Ethereum base layer that process transactions off-chain before settling them on the main network. That level of on-chain activity indicated the studio had achieved meaningful transaction throughput, but it did not translate into a durable business model.

The closure marks a significant setback for the blockchain gaming sector, which has sought to demonstrate that decentralized, on-chain game mechanics can attract and retain mainstream audiences. On-chain games aim to give players verifiable ownership of in-game assets and enable composable, interoperable mechanics that traditional titles — where publishers control all assets and progression — do not offer. Proof of Play had been one of the more prominent studios pursuing that vision, with backing from a16z's crypto investment arm.

The wind-down follows broader turbulence in the Web3 gaming industry. Yield Guild Games, a decentralized gaming organization, recently cut 35 staff members and shut down its game publishing arm to pivot toward artificial intelligence. The string of closures and pivots underscores the ongoing difficulty of converting venture-backed blockchain gaming concepts into self-sustaining businesses with mainstream reach.
