Mayen Udoffia didn’t set out to build a dating app for academia. She acted after watching the same quiet struggle repeat itself among people she knew.

Udoffia, GuiDrs’ co-founder and CEO, holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Lagos and an MS in Business Analytics from Mercer University. She later worked in client insights at JPMorgan Chase. Along the way, she watched brilliant peers, especially African scholars, spend their savings applying to schools that were never realistically going to admit them, while mentorship remained available mainly to people who already knew the right names to contact.

For many African scholars, securing a postgraduate place at a global university is not simply an academic process. It is a grueling test of endurance marked by high fees, fragmented information and repeated cold emails that often go unanswered. Four Nigerian founders decided to change that. On 1 August 2026, they launched GuiDrs, an agentic AI platform. Udoffia described it, half-jokingly, as the dating app for graduate students.

The traditional path is financially and emotionally difficult. Applicants from low-income backgrounds often spend hundreds of dollars applying to institutions where the chance of admission is effectively zero. That makes matching more than a convenience: it can help people focus scarce time and money on options that fit their profile instead of scattering applications across unreachable programs. Favour Bawa, GuiDrs’ chief technology officer and co-founder, had a similar experience while pursuing a chemical engineering research position at Ohio University.

“I had to email like 40 professors,” Bawa recalled. “There was nobody to really talk to. It was just a very, very stressful process.”

The cost adds up quickly. A typical Nigerian applicant can easily spend more than $300 on application fees alone, before accounting for document shipping, visa expenses or flight bookings. “People borrow money to do this,” she noted.

The difficulty does not end after admission. “I think a PhD is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. You’re just being pulled in multiple directions with nobody to really help you out,” she said. The founders arrived at the same conclusion: “Life shouldn’t actually be this hard. There has to be a better way.”

GuiDrs is designed as a highly targeted matching engine, not a generic advice platform. Applicants upload transcripts, curriculum vitae and cumulative grade point average. The system processes that information and identifies realistic matches, including universities and laboratories where admission and funding odds are strongest, while flagging low-probability options that would likely waste time and money.

“We like to call it Tinder, you know, the dating app for grad students because it’s helping you,” Udoffia said. “It’s matching you to schools. It’s also matching you to mentors.”

“Rather than wasting your time on those schools like the Harvards and the MITs, where the data says no, there are actually so many other opportunities and so many other schools in the US and UK that people don’t know about,” she added.

One notable feature is that the platform also identifies schools offering application fee waivers, a resource many applicants do not know exists. It is a small technical fix for a much larger structural problem.

For students already enrolled in a program, GuiDrs uses a second matching engine to connect them with mentors, other students or alumni for research collaboration and career guidance. The AI also tracks calendar-linked milestones and nudges users toward the next step, whether that is a comprehensive exam, a funding deadline or paperwork related to a green card.

Udoffia was careful to clarify what GuiDrs is not. Aside from direct messaging between mentors and mentees, there is no open chat box on the platform.

“It’s not ChatGPT,” she said. “Nothing is generated for the user. The AI sequences and personalises; it doesn’t write.” The platform uses agentic AI to manage workflows rather than produce generic essays or unsupported advice.

Users enter milestones such as qualifying for candidacy, submitting a research paper or finding collaborators, and the system maps the sequence of tasks, integrates with a calendar and tracks progress automatically.

“It is helping personalise your journey,” Bawa explained. “It is adding things to your calendar. It would actually lead you through the journey step by step like a diligent companion.” She added that the platform is already useful in her own life: “I’m the first colourful user of this platform, so it’s helping my own life right now.”

The technology is meant to support, not replace, human judgment. It also connects users to mentors who have already gone through similar paths.

The platform’s geographic focus is deliberate. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Europe remain the most common destinations for African scholars.

Even after students receive admission offers, the challenges continue. Advanced research is difficult, and finding the right mentor often still depends on personal networks and privilege. GuiDrs therefore operates as a two-sided marketplace that links current students with verified mentors, graduate students and alumni across 159 research areas.

“You can find people that are doing something similar to you on the platform,” Udoffia said. “If you’re designing an experiment, you can find somebody on the platform that’s probably done that experiment a couple years ago. You don’t have to start everything all over.” Conversations that once required endless email chains can become direct exchanges.

In its first three weeks, the platform acquired 120 users organically, including 70 daily active users, and 30 verified mentors. Growth has come through targeted LinkedIn outreach. A collaboration with Black Doctorates Matter is also formalizing a network that previously existed mainly through scattered social media messages.

Most graduate students and postdocs in the US and Canada are legally barred from direct payment for mentoring, so GuiDrs uses volunteering certificates, a rating system and points redeemable for gift cards. The approach is also practical because volunteering credentials can matter in Western job and immigration applications. “The goal is to bring organisational structure to existing mentorship communities that typically rely on informal methods like email or LinkedIn,” the team said.

The founders also acknowledged a difficult issue around intellectual property. Graduate students often share unpublished research, methodology and data with mentors. When asked how GuiDrs protects that information, Udoffia did not dismiss the concern. She said the platform has privacy policies and terms of service governing document handling, but added that the harder problem is human behavior.

“This is currently a problem we are still thinking through the best way to solve,” she said.

The platform is currently free while it scales, though a modest fee may be introduced later if traction continues.

Looking five years ahead, the founders want GuiDrs to become a primary global hub where people assess both academic and broader career opportunities. “In five years, the team aims to position GuiDrs as the primary, go-to platform for global talent looking to assess academic and career opportunities,” with plans to expand support across an entire professional career path.

What sets GuiDrs apart is that it was built by people who experienced the same friction they are trying to remove. It is a platform shaped by lived frustration, designed to make guidance more structured, more accessible and less dependent on elite networks.
