International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) secretary-general Robert Ashdown has been appointed chair of trustees at seafarer charity Stella Maris UK, succeeding Captain Esteban Pacha, who is stepping down after eight years in the role.

Ashdown is returning to the maritime welfare charity after previously serving for nine years as a trustee, a move that Stella Maris said brings continuity and extensive industry experience at board level.

He has led IACS since May 2015. His previous positions include secretary-general of Cruise Lines International Association in Brussels, head of the UK Chamber of Shipping’s technical division, and head of the British Rig Owners Association. He is also a long-standing governor of the World Maritime University.

“Safe shipping is as much about people as vessels,” Ashdown said. “Stella Maris plays a vital role in supporting the seafarers and fishers who keep the maritime world moving, particularly when they are far from home or facing crisis.”

He said his priority would be ensuring the charity remains equipped to respond to growing pressures facing seafarers and fishers, including isolation, abandonment, exploitation, conflict, injury and welfare concerns.

Pacha will continue supporting Stella Maris as its first ambassador, with a focus on awareness, partnerships and advocacy across the maritime community and the Catholic Church.

Stella Maris UK chief executive Tim Hill welcomed Ashdown’s appointment and thanked Pacha for his service.

Formerly known as Apostleship of the Sea, Stella Maris provides practical, pastoral and spiritual support to seafarers, fishers and their families through chaplains and ship visitors in the UK and internationally during emergencies, bereavement and other crises. The handover comes as seafarer welfare remains a practical concern across the shipping sector, where access to shore support can be limited and issues such as fatigue, abandonment and mental strain can affect crews far from home.
